History of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
On March 03, 2006, the project named ‘Unique Identification for BPL Families’ was approved by the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India.
Accordingly, a process committee was constituted on July 03, 2006, with the objective of giving suggestions in the process of updating and modification of data and fields from the main database to be created under the unique identity of the BPL family project.
This committee has prepared a paper titled ‘Strategic Vision Unique Identification of Residents’ dated 26th November, 2006.
Based on that paper, an Empowered Group of Ministers was constituted on December 04, 2006 to integrate the National Population Register under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Unique Identification Number project of the Department of Information Technology.
Prior to being set up as a statutory authority, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was affiliated to the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog) vide Gazette Notification No. A-43011/02/2009-Administration-1 dated January 28, 2009. Worked as an office.
The First UID Number was issued to a resident of Nandurbar, Maharashtra on 29th September, 2010.
